Fall armyworm (FAW) is a dangerous transboundary pest with a high potential to spread rapidly due to its natural spread capacity and opportunities presented by international trade. Farmers need significant support to manage FAW sustainably in their cropping systems through Integrated Pest Management (IPM) activities. FAW cannot be eliminated. FAO has launched a Global Action for FAW Control as a response to the international threat that FAW is posing for food security and the livelihoods of millions of smallholder farmers. In Egypt, FAO in cooperation the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation trained 750 inspectors, farmers, entomologists and researchers in 7 governorates, on how to identify the pest in the field and how to apply integrated pest management strategies to prevent the pest from spreading.

The Fall Armyworm is a highly destructive and invasive pest that poses a severe threat to global food security, particularly in Africa, Asia, and the Near East. Its rapid spread and ability to damage a wide range of crops, especially maize, jeopardizes the livelihoods of millions of small-scale farmers. Effective management requires an integrated, sustainable approach combining monitoring, early warning, biological controls, and judicious pesticide use, making coordinated international action and farmer education critical to mitigating its impact.
